PROVO -- After a convincing victory at home on Thursday, the No. 11 BYU women’s soccer team (13-2-2, 4-0-1) returned to South Field on Saturday and defeated conference opponent TCU 2-0 in a very physical game.
“Conference games are always physical because emotions are high,” BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said following the victory. “We have already seen that in our games against Utah and New Mexico but we played through it and this was a big win for us.”
The Cougars were led by sophomore forward Lauren Anderson and freshman forward Carlee Payne who each contributed one goal a piece to lead BYU to its tenth shutout of the season. The victory gives Cougar sophomore goalkeeper McKinzie Olson her ninth personal shutout this season, tying her career-high record.
“Our defense continues to show up game after game," Rockwood said. "It's very important for us to have them playing their best. McKinzie had some very big saves for us today.”
Although the Cougars were not the first to get a shot on goal, they were the first to score. The first shot on goal was fired by the Horned Frog’s Jackie Torda.
BYU, looking to defend their unbeaten conference record, got off to a quick start shortly thereafter as Anderson scored the first goal for BYU off an assist from Payne eleven minutes into the game.
The Cougars got their second good look at the goal at the 25-minute mark when freshman forward Jessica Ringwood barely missed the goal to the right. By the 30-minute mark, both teams had two corner kicks.
At the 33-minute mark, BYU found another good shot on goal when Jennie Marshall and Carlee Payne took on two TCU defenders but Payne’s shot was wide to the right.
With five minutes remaining the first period, the Cougars were awarded a penalty kick. The kick was attempted by senior Hermann Trophy Candidate Andrea Willis but was deflected off the defensive wall.
At the conclusion of the first period each team had taken five shots but BYU remained ahead 1-0.
Seven minutes into the second period junior Kassidy Shumway’s fancy footwork led to a shot opportunity for the Cougars but Shumway’s shot was wide to the left. In the 55th minute of the game, TCU’s sophomore forward Jordan Calhoun took a shot on goal but it bounced off the right goal post.
The Horned Frog’s frustration soon began to show as the game became very physical early in the second period. Still, BYU managed to maintain composure and, at the 58-minute mark, Payne and Shumway connected for the Cougars' second goal of the game. Payne has now scored a goal in nine of BYU's 17 games.
With 11 minutes remaining in the game, senior forward Kristi Dow-Jackson found a perfect shot on the goal but a save by Walters prevented the goal. Both teams continued to battle until the end but the Cougars' strong defensive play helped them secure the victory.
The Cougars look to continue their conference winning streak on the road against Air Force next Saturday at 5 p.m.
“These next few games will be very important for us,” Payne said. “With a few more wins we can come back here confident and ready for the tournament.”
