SALT LAKE -- For the second year in a row, senior guard Jimmer Fredette led the No. 18/21 BYU men’s basketball team (10-0) in scoring with 33 points against the Arizona Wildcats (8-2), helping the Cougars to a 87-65 victory on Saturday at Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City.

Along with Fredette’s 33 points, he added a career-high nine rebounds, three assists and one steal. BYU had two other players score in double figures, as freshman Kyle Collinsworth had 12 points and sophomore Brandon Davies added 11 points.

“It’s a good team win and we can build on it,” BYU head coach Dave Rose said. “We have a couple of days off for finals and look forward to next Saturday.”

BYU hit 29-of-56 shots for 52 percent on the day while connecting on five three-pointers. The Cougar defense held the Wildcats to just 35 percent shooting and outrebounded Arizona 38-34.

Arizona’s top scorer, sophomore Derrick Williams was held below his season average of 20 points to just 13, only scoring three in the second half.

“Our guys were really active,” Rose said. “We got our hands on deflected passes and I think it made them a little passive.”

BYU started the game on a hot streak, opening with a 12-4 run. Fredette contributed with seven points in the opening four minutes of play. The Cougars made five of six field goals during the stretch, including two three-pointers, one from Fredette and another from junior Noah Hartsock.

Junior guard Charles Abouo hit a 15-foot jumper with 8:30 remaining in the first half, sending the BYU crowd into a frenzy while going on a 14-0 run, extending the Cougar lead to 28-10.

Fredette put in 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting in the first half as the Cougars went into the break with their largest lead of the game, up 44-25. BYU shot 56 percent for the half while holding the Wildcats to just 28 percent.

Junior James Anderson came off the bench to give BYU a boost on the glass, bringing down four rebounds while blocking two shots in the first half. Anderson finished with three points, six rebounds, two blocks and one steal for the Cougars.

With Hartsock in the locker room after taking a shot to the head fighting for a rebound in the first half, Logan Magnusson started the second half and got right to work. The senior captain snagged two rebounds and hit a three-pointer in the first five minutes after the break.

The Cougars continued to roll with a crowd-pleasing, one-handed dunk from Davies to put BYU up 67-49 with 10:19 remaining in the game. Davies was fouled on the shot and converted the three-point play to make it 68-49.

BYU was able to empty its bench in the final minutes, getting a total 11 Cougars time on the floor in route to the 87-65 win.

Next week BYU travels to Anaheim, Calif., for the John Wooden Classic. The Cougars will face the UCLA Bruins on Saturday, December 18 at 2:30 p.m. PT. Fox Sports West is set to broadcast the game.
