ANAHEIM -- BYU men’s basketball suffered its first loss of the season in the John R. Wooden Classic, losing to UCLA 86-79 on Saturday at the Honda Center.
"It was a very entertaining game and our guys played really hard. I give a lot of credit to UCLA," BYU coach Dave Rose said. "They were physical, strong and played well. We didn't really have an answer for their size. I was really proud of how hard our team played. We played really hard and competed until the end. We needed to make a few more plays."
The Cougars were led by Jimmer Fredette who scored 25 points in the loss. Brandon Davies added 18 points while Jackson Emery also scored 15 points and tallied two steals. Davies, Emery and Chris Collinsworth, who returned to the court for the Cougars after a six-game absense due to injury, led the Cougar rebounding efforts with five boards each in the loss.
Jimmer Fredette's sharp shooting seemed to have carried over from his 33-point performance in BYU’s victory over Arizona last Saturday as the senior guard scored eight points in the opening four and a half minutes of the game to give the Cougars a 16-6 lead.
The advantage did not last for BYU as the Bruins battled back to go on an 18-2 run to take a 24-18 lead with 9:26 remaining in the first half. The quick start and the Cougars' impressive shooting were not enough as BYU would score just 14 points in the next 13 minutes.
Fredette ended the half with six points in the final 1:30 of the half to bring BYU within six points of the Bruins. Trailing 43-37, the Cougars found themselves behind at the break for just the second time this season. The last time being in the double-overtime thriller against South Florida, but this time BYU was unable to recover, never leading in the second half.
UCLA came out strong in the second half, extending their lead immediately to take their first double-digit lead of the game with the score 51-41. The Bruins would go on to stretch the lead to 13 before Brandon Davies and Chris Collinsworth took over for BYU. Davies scored six-straight points for the Cougars followed by a basket from Collinsworth who also added a steal and rebound to cut the Bruin lead to nine, 61-52.
Seven free throws later, BYU had cut the Bruin lead to two at 61-59. UCLA answered by going on 6-0 run with 9:09 remaining. The Bruins continued to fight off the Cougars, once again extending their lead to 10, 82-72 with 2:49 remaining. BYU wasn’t done yet, cutting the lead to five with 1:32 on the clock on a layup by Fredette but a dunk 30 seconds later sealed the deal for the Bruins as they would go on to win 86-79.
The Cougars will play two more games before Christmas, taking on Weber State in Ogden on Tuesday before returning to Provo to play UTEP on Thursday. Both games will begin at 7 p.m. and can be heard on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM and 1160 AM. The Weber State game can be seen live on KJZZ.
