BUFFALO -- Jimmer Fredette exploded for 28 second-half points en route to a season-high 34 to lead the No. 16 BYU (13-1) men’s basketball team in ending Buffalo’s (7-4) 10-game home court win streak Thursday with a 90-82 victory in Buffalo, N.Y.
After going 1-for-9 from the field in the first half, Fredette went 10-for-15 in the second half to post his third 30-point game of the season, adding six assists, two rebounds and a steal on the night.
“It’s really difficult to come in here and get a win," Rose said. "It felt like a league game and I'm really proud of our guys.”
Adding to Fredette’s efforts, two other Cougars scored in double figures, with junior Noah Hartsock posting 19 with six rebounds and three blocks, and sophomore Brandon Davies tacking on 18 to go along with six rebounds and one steal.
With four steals on the night, senior Jackson Emery improved his career total to 191 and moved within four of Danny Ainge and the BYU all-time lead.
Hartsock guided the Cougars on an early 13-2 run to take a 16-5 lead with 13:50 remaining in the first half. He posted 13 in the first eight minutes of the game, setting a new career high by going 3-for-3 from three-point range.
Buffalo answered with an 8-2 run of their own to pull within five at 18-13 with 10 minutes left in the half.
A timely block by sophomore Brandon Davies aided a 7-0 run by the Cougars after a Stephen Rogers three pointer put BYU up 25-15. Buffalo came back to tie the score at 25 apiece with 5 minutes remaining in the first half.
BYU held off a late first-half Buffalo run to take a 39-37 lead into halftime. Davies added seven points in the first half to go along with three rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Senior Jimmer Fredette (24.9 ppg) recovered from an unusually slow first half to score six quick points as second-half play began to equal his first half total and extend BYU’s lead to 49-41.
“We knew that they were going to give a great effort," Fredette said. "They were up for it and their coach did a great job of getting them ready. I was just proud of our team and that we were able to stop their runs and sustain the lead.”
The Cougars were not able to widen the margin, with the Bulls charging back to bring the score to 54-53 with 11:48 remaining in the game before Fredette’s second three of the game a steal by Noah Hartsock was converted to give the Cougars a 59-53 advantage.
Despite a back-and-forth finish, with Buffalo coming within six, the Cougars continued the offensive attack to capture their 13th victory of the season.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Cougars, who return to Provo Saturday to face Fresno Pacific at the Marriott Center with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. MDT.
