GLENS FALLS -- In what felt like a home game despite being more than two thousand miles away from Provo, the No. 18 BYU Cougars defeated Vermont, 86-58, in the much-anticipated homecoming of senior guard Jimmer Fredette. With the win, BYU improves to 9-0 this season.
"We got a lot of transition baskets which really helped our shooting percentage,” BYU head coach Dave Rose. “Our coaches did a terrific job with the preparation and the game plan and our players did a good job of executing it."
The Cougars were led by Fredette, who finished with 26 points and five assists.
"Homecomings are difficult,” Rose said. “There are so many emotions for players and you don't really know what's going to happen but he was good from start to finish."
Noah Hartsock’s 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds gave the junior his first double-double of the season and the second of his career. Brandon Davies finished with 12 points along with two assists and two steals. Jackson Emery and Charles Abouo both finished with 11 points while Emery also contributed five rebounds, five steals and four assists.
The game did not begin the way the Glens Falls faithful would have liked as the Catamounts were the first on board with two free throws early on. It didn’t take long for the hometown hero to heat up as Fredette scored the next seven points to give the Cougars an early 7-2 lead with 17:51 remaining in the first half. BYU would not trail Vermont for the remainder of the game.
Fredette finished the half with 11 points, all of which were scored in the first 10 minutes of the game. However, Fredette’s teammates showed the 6,300 fans in attendance, many of whom have previously only watched BYU play on TV, why their team is ranked No. 18 in the country. BYU came out hot from long range shooting 6-for-11 (.542) from behind the arc as five Cougars hit a trey before halftime. They would finish the game having shot 50 percent from the three-point line. The Cougars went into the break with a 38-25 lead at the half.
In the second half, the first basket came off an assist from Fredette that found Brandon Davies wide open in the lane for a one-handed slam. Vermont was able to cut the BYU lead to ten with 16:47. One minute later, Emery recorded his fourth steal of the night on the way to a slam dunk of his own.
With 10:58 remaining, Abouo hit his third trey of the night to give the Cougars their largest lead of the contest at that point in the game with the score 59-41. After remaining relatively quiet through the opening 11 minutes of the second half, Fredette drove to the basket, scored and made a free throw to complete the three-point play to extend the BYU lead to 20. On the following play, Emery stole the ball once again and threw the outlet pass to Fredette who brought the roof off the Glens Falls Civic Center after throwing a behind-the-back pass to Kyle Collinsworth for an easy lay-up.
With less than four minutes remaining, Fredette drained a jumper from downtown. Fredette scored his final three points from the free throw line before coming out of the game to a standing ovation.
“I get nervous for every game,” Fredette said following the game. “But for this one especially. Luckily we were able to come out here, defend, make shots and get a win.”
BYU will return to the Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City where they will take on the University of Arizona at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11. The game will be broadcast on BYUtv and can be heard live on KSL radio.
