PROVO, Utah – BYU coach Dave Rose has announced that Nate Austin has joined the men’s basketball staff as a graduate assistant.
Austin played for Rose from 2011 to 2016 and owns the program record for games played (153) and is second in career offensive rebounds (289). He started 65 games for the Cougars and posted career averages of 3.5 points and 5.2 rebounds while shooting 52.8 percent from the field.
In four full seasons (Austin missed most of 2014-15 due to injury), he helped the Cougars reach the NCAA tournament twice (2012 and 2014) and make two trips to the NIT semifinals (2013 and 2016) in Madison Square Garden.
Following his playing career, Austin was an assistant coach at Long Peak High School in Alpine, Utah, for two seasons under Dave Evans. He helped the Knights claim 6A state title and reach the quarterfinals of the Geico National Championships in 2018. In 2017, Austin helped Lone Peak take second in the 5A state tournament.
Austin prepped at Lone Peak and played under current BYU assistant coach Quincy Lewis. As a junior in 2007-08, Austin helped the Knights claim the 5A state title. He earned first-team all-state honors in 2008-09 as Lone Peak finished second in the state.
