STOCKTON, Utah — BYU men’s golf sits in fourth place after shooting a 4-under-par 284 in the first round of the NCAA Stockton Regional at The Reserve at Spanos Park.

"The guys showed resilience today," said BYU director of golf Todd Miller. "It was deflating to start our regional championship with two doubles and a bogey in the first few holes but you have to applaud the guys for staying focused and making a nice run in the middle of the round."

No. 16 Stanford leads the way after a 10-under-par 278 in the opening round to take a one-shot lead over No. 4 Arizona State who shot 279. Denver sits in third after a 6-under-par 282 showing and has just a two-shot lead over the Cougars at 284. LSU and Liberty sit in a tie for fourth at 287 to round out the top-5.

The No. 55 player in the country Carson Lundell and teammate David Timmins lead BYU on day one with matching 3-under 69s. Lundell birdied his first hole, bogeyed number two and then shot three-under the rest of the way to put himself just one-shot back of the leaders going into day two. Timmins shot a scorching 4-under on his opening nine then made his lone bogey on 12 to card a 69.

Max Brenchley made back-to-back birdies on five and six to get back to even par by the turn. The sophomore then made two bogeys and two birdies on the back nine to finish in a tie for 30th with an opening round 72.

Cole Ponich carded a two over 74 in round one and is tied for 48th. Tyson Shelley posted a 5-over 77 in the first round to round out the Cougar scoring.

BYU will tee off with LSU and Liberty in round two at 8 a.m. PDT. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
