PROVO, Utah — BYU swim and dive invites fans to preview the 2023-2024 team during its annual Blue/White Meet at the Richards Building Pool on Friday at 2:45 p.m. MDT.
Cougar swim and dive embarks on its inaugural Big 12 Conference campaign after competing in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) since the 2011-12 season.
Over 12 years in the MPSF, BYU men’s swim and dive secured seven conference titles and never finished worse than third at the annual championship meet. BYU women’s swim and dive took home one conference championship and never finished worse than fourth in the MPSF. A season ago, the BYU men won their third-consecutive conference championship while the women finished third.
BYU enters a conference long dominated by Texas. The Longhorn men have won each of the league’s swim and dive titles since the event’s 1997 genesis. Texas women’s swim and dive enters 2023-24 with 11-consecutive Big 12 championships.
The Cougars are led into the new era by third-year swimming head coach Shari Skabelund and ninth-year diving head coach Tyce Routson.
BYU men’s swim and dive returns four reigning MPSF individual conference champions among a total of 15 veterans with a combined 35 all-conference honors earned in 2022-23.
Brad Prolo won his second-straight 200 fly conference crown in February along with the MPSF men’s 100 breast championship and first team all-conference status in the 200 individual medley. Prolo enters the season ranked No. 2 all-time at BYU in the men’s 100 breast at 52.67.
Diego Camacho Salgado and Luigi Riva helped BYU successfully defends its 2022 MPSF 400 medley relay title with yet another in 2023. Riva also helped the 400 freestyle relay squad earn first team all-MPSF. Camacho Salgado enters the 2023-24 season after having competed for Mexico in the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan July 23-30.
Diver Mickey Strauss has garnered at least one individual conference title in three of the last four seasons. The veteran took home the MPSF’s platform hardware in 2023 and currently ranks No. 2 all-time at BYU in the men’s 1-meter at 395.85. This season, Strauss will look to surpass Brandon Watson’s school record of 398.20 set in 2012.
Abraham Barragan, Emerson Edwards and Tama Tuitama lead several other BYU men who look to ascend the program’s record boards in the season to come.
Returned missionary Payton Plumb brings valuable experience to the team after completing his two-year service for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Atlanta, Georgia. The sophomore from St. George, Utah helped BYU to an MPSF 200 freestyle relay championship in 2021 and finished his freshman season ranked fourth all-time for the Cougars in the 200 free.
Tennessee transfer and Pleasant Grove, Utah native Jordan Tiffany leads a bevy of talented newcomers to the team. Tiffany finished the 2021 season as an SEC 100 and 200 fly finalist for the Volunteers while also garnering SEC All-Academic Second Team honors. The 13-time Utah high school state champion is the son of former BYU swimmers Celeste (Belliston) and Stephen Tiffany.
The Cougars’ incoming freshmen include talent from around the nation and the globe with swimmers such as Bryce Broadhead and Joshua Reed. Broadhead arrives at BYU holding five Utah high school state records and high school All-American honors. The Lehi, Utah native signed with the Cougars over interest from Ohio State and Utah.
Reed comes to BYU from Newcastle, Australia where he finished as an A and B finalist at the Australian Age Championships in the 50 and 100 fly, free and backstroke. Reed also qualified for the 2021 Australian Olympic Trials.
