MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Jordan Tiffany, Brad Prolo, Tanner Edwards and Luigi Riva broke their own 200 medley relay school record and qualified for the NCAA Championships in BYU’s debut at the Big 12 Swim and Dive Championships on Tuesday afternoon.

"The meet was full of energy today," said BYU head swimming coach Shari Skabelund. "I am so proud of how all of our athletes keep finding ways to get better."

The Cougar foursome clipped 0.82 seconds off their previous record to finish runner-up behind Texas’ now-sixth-ranked time nationally. Tiffany led off for BYU with a personal-best 21.06 in the 50 back followed by Prolo’s 23.39 in the 50 breast. Edwards took the 50 fly third leg at 20.10 and Riva clocked 19.12 in the 50 free anchor spot.

Tiffany, Prolo, Edwards and Riva previously set the 200 medley relay school record at the Mizzou Invitational in November 2023, and ranked 24th nationally. With their performance on Tuesday, the BYU squad surpassed Texas A&M for 16th in the national standings and achieved an NCAA Championships automatic qualifying time. The runner-up spot in the 200 medley relay also gave BYU 56 points to begin its team scoring tally.

The diving relay trio of Russell Haws, Chase Hindmarsh and Mickey Strauss added 54 points to BYU’s early total after taking third at 330.05. Haws, Hindmarsh and Strauss finished behind Texas and TCU but overcame divers from host West Virginia and Cincinnati.

“Our team event divers were amped and ready,” said BYU head diving coach Tyce Routson. “We needed a big dive to reach the podium and we did it and got the hardware.”

The Cougars finished the day with Joshua Reed, Abraham Barragan, Payton Plumb and Diego Camacho Salgado taking fifth in the 800 free relay at 6:30.70.

BYU enters Wednesday at third in the team scoring with 160 points.
