PROVO, Utah — BYU head coach Kalani Sitake today announced the team’s captains and co-captains that make up the program’s Team Leadership Council for 2024.
Voted on by the players, the team’s 15-member Leadership Council represents all three phases of the team, offense, defense and special teams, led by four captains—senior defensive end Tyler Batty, senior cornerback Jakob Robinson, senior center Connor Pay and junior wide receiver Chase Roberts.
The Leadership Council also consists of five co-captains on both offense and defense and one representing the team’s specialists. In all, the Leadership Council comprises eight seniors and seven juniors.
Co-Captains on offense include quarterbacks senior Gerry Bohanon and junior Jake Retzlaff, senior wide receiver Darius Lassiter, senior running back Hinckley Ropati and junior offensive lineman Weylin Lapuaho. Defensive players and specialists voted as co-captains include senior defensive tackle John Nelson, senior defensive end Logan Lutui, junior safeties Talan Alfrey and Tanner Wall, junior linebacker Jack Kelly and junior kicker Will Ferrin.
“We have a close-knit group of players on the team with a lot of good leaders, and I’m confident in the leadership these 15 players will provide for our team,” said Sitake. “The Leadership Council will meet regularly to plan and provide the leadership responsibilities each has with his teammates and for the program, on and off the field. On game days, three of our four captains will be joined each game by one of the co-captains to represent the team at the coin toss, while the other captain will coordinate with the rest of the leadership in the locker room to lead our team as we come out to take the field.”
BYU opens the 2024 season this Saturday when the Cougars host Southern Illinois in LaVell Edwards Stadium at 6 p.m. MT. Season tickets are still available as well as single-game tickets. Saturday's game will be televised on ESPN+.
