Meet the Foes
The Cougars will face seven programs in this week’s meet, including Arizona, Army, Auburn, Duke, George Washington, NC State and Virginia Tech.
On the men’s side, four of the seven programs rank in the CSCAA’s top 25. They include NC State at No. 10, Auburn at No. 15, Arizona at No. 18 and Virginia Tech at No. 21. BYU’s men’s program also received two votes in the top 25 ranking.
Many of these programs are home to athletes who own some of the fastest times in the nation this season, including the host NC State, whose sophomore swimmer Kaii Winkler holds the quickest 100 freestyle finish this season.
Arizona, Army, Virginia Tech and Auburn all hold top times nationally as well.
On the women’s side, another four of the seven programs are ranked in the CSCAA’s top 25. Among that group is No. 5 NC State, No. 13 Auburn, No. 20 Duke and No. 23 Arizona. Virginia Tech also received 10 votes in the rankings.
NC State stands ahead of the other programs with top times this season. Eneli Jefimova of the Wolfpack holds the fastest 50 breaststroke in the nation this season as well as Tyler Driscoll, who leads the nation in the 50 butterfly. Sophomore Erika Pelaez sits just behind Driscoll with the second fastest time in the nation this season in the same event.
BYU
BYU returns to the pool after a head-to-head competition against UNLV. The men’s team defeated the Rebels 182-117, while the women’s team fell 169-132. The matchup in Las Vegas featured multiple top-10 performances, including a BYU-record finish in the women’s 200 freestyle by Haylee Tiffany. Easton Mousser and Mattia Reina also scored top-three finishes in program history in the 1000 freestyle (Mousser) and the 200 butterfly (Reina).
BYU will resume team competition on Jan. 3 in Honolulu against Hawaii at the conclusion of this week's meet.
