TROPHY CLUB, Texas — BYU women’s golf sits in ninth place at 3-over-par after 36 holes at The Bruzzy presented by Ashley Herrera at Trophy Club Country Club on Tuesday.
María José “MJ” Barragán leads the Cougars, sitting tied for seventh at 5 under.
“We are a young team, so for their first event, they have battled well,” head coach Carrie Roberts said. "MJ was really impressive today. It’s fun to see her in the hunt.”
Barragán posted rounds of 71 and 68 to finish the day at 5-under 139. She opened the first round with a birdie on No. 6 and a bogey on No. 8. After the turn, Barragán added a birdie on No. 11 and played the rest of the round at par to finish 1 under.
In the second round, Barragán offset a birdie on No. 3 with a bogey on No. 7 before making birdies on Nos. 10, 14, 16 and 17. She fired a 4-under 68 to conclude day one.
Whitney Banz shot rounds of 73 and 71 to finish the day at even par and tied for 27th. After four birdies and five bogeys in the opening round, Banz overcame bogeys on Nos. 7 and 12 in the second round with an eagle on No. 14 and a birdie on No. 17.
Kanyanol (Naji) Aramkul (75-73-148) and Kate Walker (73-75-148) sit tied for 43rd at 4 over.
Nya Palmer recorded consecutive rounds of 75 to finish at 6-over 150 and sit in 50th.
Competing as an individual, freshman Tatum Otto (75-76-151) sits tied for 51st after finishing at 7 over.
Oklahoma (344-357-701) holds first place at 19 under, recording 56 birdies as a team across the two rounds. UTSA sits in second at 15 under, while Texas A&M is third at 12 under. Texas Tech, at 10 under, and Illinois, Nebraska and Xavier, at 9 under, round out the top seven.
