TROPHY CLUB, Texas — BYU women’s golf (292-287-290–869) finished ninth at 5-over-par at The Bruzzy, presented by Ashley Herrera, at Trophy Club Country Club on Wednesday.
Senior María José “MJ” Barragán shot a 9-under 207 over three rounds to place sixth and set a 54-hole career best, leading BYU in the tournament. No other Cougar finished in the top 25.
“I’m super proud of MJ this week, showing how hard she worked this summer,” head coach Carrie Roberts said. "We have some work to do and will get after it for the next one.”
Barragán shot a 4-under 68 in the final round, matching her 18-hole career best. She opened the final round with birdies on the first and seventh holes before adding back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14 and 15. She played the rest of the round at even par to finish 4 under.
“I’m really happy that all the work I put in during the off-season is paying off,” Barragán said. “I’m believing in the process.”
Whitney Banz (73-71-73-217) closed out the event tied for 33rd after a 1-over-par final round.
Freshman Kate Walker (73-75-73-221) placed 41st in her collegiate debut after finishing 5 over.
Kanyanol (Naji) Aramkul (75-73-76-224) recorded a 4-over-par round to tie for 47th, while Nya Palmer (75-75-82-232) finished in 60th.
Competing as an individual, freshman Tatum Otto (75-76-76-227) tied for 52nd in her collegiate debut, with a 4-over round on Wednesday.
Oklahoma (274-283-274-831) earned the team title at 33 under, posting a 14-under-par final round. UTSA (282-279-280-841) finished second at 23 under, while Texas A&M (281-283-279-843) finished third at 21-under par. Illinois (284-283-285-852) and Nebraska (288-279-285-852) came in at 12-under par to round out the top five.
The Cougars next compete in Lubbock, Texas, at the Red Raider Invitational at The Rawls Course on Sept. 22-23.
