WICHITA, Kan. — BYU women’s golf is in fifth place at 4 over par after day one of the OU Intercollegiate presented by PDI at Wichita Country Club on Monday.
Senior María José “MJ” Barragán leads the Cougars at even par and is tied for eighth after rounds of 70 and 72. Freshman Tatum Otto is tied for 15th at 1 over, while junior Kanyanol (Naji) Aramkul is tied for 18th at 2 over.
“We’re proud of the girls for staying proactive and adjusting and adapting today,” head coach Carrie Roberts said. “If we can make a few more putts, we can have a really good third round.”
Barragán opened the tournament with a 1-under 70. Starting on the sixth hole, she made a birdie on No. 9 and a bogey on No. 10 to remain at even par. Birdies on the 15th and the first and a bogey on the third gave her a 1-under finish.
Starting the second round on No. 6, Barragán carded a double bogey on No. 7 to move to 2 over early. After offsetting a bogey on No. 13 with a birdie on No. 14, she added a birdie on the second hole to finish with a 1-over 72.
Otto fired a 1-over 72 in the opening round, including one birdie and two bogeys. After two birdies and two bogeys in the second round gave her an even-par 71, she finished the day tied for 15th.
Aramkul made two birdies and three bogeys in the opening round to card a 1-over 71. She followed with a 1-over 71 in the second round, highlighted by one birdie and two bogeys.
Senior Whitney Banz (70-75-145) and freshman Kate Walker (72-73-145) are tied for 26th after day one at 3 over.
Competing as an individual, junior Ava Schroeder is tied for 35th at 4 over after carding rounds of 74 and 72. Sophomore Nya Palmer, also competing individually, is 14 over in 64th with rounds of 75 and 81.
Tournament host Oklahoma leads the tournament at 7 under, with two players in the top three. Missouri is second at 2 under, while Santa Clara and No. 23 Eastern Michigan are tied for third at 2 over.
The final round will begin with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. MDT on Tuesday. Live scoring is available at scoreboard.com.
