Women’s golf finishes fourth at OU Intercollegiate

The Cougars claimed their second consecutive top-five finish after shooting a 3-under final round at the OU Intercollegiate on Tuesday.

WICHITA, Kan. — BYU women’s golf (284-288-281-853) shot a 3-under final round to finish fourth at 1 over par at the OU Intercollegiate presented by PDI at Wichita Country Club on Tuesday.

María José “MJ” Barragán (70-72-69-211) tied for seventh at 2 under par after firing a 2-under 69 in the final round. The senior recorded her third consecutive top-10 finish of the season to lead the Cougars.

“I am super proud of the team effort today and getting under par,” head coach Carrie Roberts said. “They are embracing the provide mindset, which is allowing their skills to show through. It was a battle on the greens, and we feel like we did well to stay positive and in it the whole time.”

Barragán made a birdie on No. 5 to open the final round before adding another birdie on No. 8. After the turn, she bogeyed the 11th hole to sit at 1 under before making a birdie on the final hole to finish in 69 strokes.

Freshman Tatum Otto (72-71-70-213) finished at even par to tie for 11th, recording the best finish of her collegiate career. She carded a 1-under 70 in the final round, making three birdies and two bogeys to match her lowest 18-hole score.

Junior Kanyanol (Naji) Aramkul (72-72-70-214) shot a 1-under 70 in the final round to tie for 18th at 1 over, rounding out the Cougars in the top 25.

Senior Whitney Banz (70-75-72-217) fired a 1-over 72 in the final round to tie for 26th at 4 over par, while freshman Kate Walker (72-73-73-218) tied for 29th at 5 over par after carding a 2-over 73.

Competing as individuals, junior Ava Schroeder (74-72-71-217) shot an even-par 71 in the final round to tie for 26th at 4 over, while sophomore Nya Palmer (75-81-78-234) took 64th at 21 over.

Tournament host Oklahoma (290-271-278-839) won the team title at 13 under par. Missouri (285-281-275-841) took second at 11 under par, while Santa Clara (281-289-280-850) finished third at 2 under par. Nebraska (283-291-281-855) rounded out the top five at 3 over par.

BYU will head to Lihu’e, Hawaii, to compete in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational at The Ocean Course at Hokuala Oct. 19-21.
