IRVING, Texas — BYU redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Kingsley Suamataia was named to the Big 12 Conference 2023 Preseason All-Big 12 Football Team on Wednesday, chosen by media representatives who cover the league.
Suamataia was one of 29 players from the 14-team conference to be selected to the Preseason All-Big 12 Football Team, which included 15 on offense and 14 on defense.
Texas led all teams in the conference with five players selected. In addition, Kansas had four, while Kansas State, Oklahoma State and TCU had three. Cincinnati, Texas Tech and West Virginia had two, while Baylor, BYU, Iowa State and Oklahoma had one selection each.
Suamataia, a 6-6, 315-pound lineman from Orem, Utah, was previously named to the Phil Steele Preseason All-Big 12 Team and the Athlon Sports 2023 All-Big 12 Team for the 2023 season.
As a redshirt freshman in 2022, Suamataia started 12 games for the Cougars and was named Freshman All-American Second Team by The Athletic. He was also named College Football Network All-Independent First Team, Phil Steele All-Independent Second Team and Midseason Freshman All-American Second Team by College Football News.
BYU kicks off its inaugural season as a member of the Big 12 Conference against Sam Houston State on Sept. 2 at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on FS1 with the kickoff scheduled for 8:15 p.m. MT.
