PLAYER NOTES
Nick Emery made a season-high four 3-pointers, including three in the first half. He finished with a team-high 18 points. He has been in double figures in four of five games this season.
TJ Haws notched his third game in double figures with 15 points. He was 3 of 5 from downtown, giving him at least three triples in three games this season.
Davin Guinn scored a career-high 11 points and went 3 of 3 from the 3-point line and 4 of 4 overall. He scored a total of 14 points last season and has 18 in the last two.
Yoeli Childs has at least one block in every game this season after picking up two more against Valpo.
Eric Mika scored 13 points, giving him double figures in every game this season. He went 7 of 8 from the free throw line.

BYU was 27 of 32 from the free throw line. The Cougars have made at least 82 percent from the line in three of the five games so far, knocking down 78.7 percent this season as a team from the charity stripe.

It’s an inexperienced group together and us playing together. We played too many minutes tonight where we weren’t ourselves and let [Valparaiso] off the hook on offense with just terrible offensive possessions where we were frustrated and going to rely on ourselves to go do our own thing.
On the defensive end we did not do a very good job of being able to compete and contest them. A lot of that is because we were in foul trouble and trying to find a way to physically compete and stop them without sending them to the free throw line and without getting ourselves disqualified.
In games where it comes down to a possession or two with who is going to win or not, we just have to a better job of being able to compete on that drive or rebound and not worry about what is going to happen as a result of it. The only way you learn that is by doing it together and playing. Hopefully we can learn from this game.
We came out and battled. Valpo is a good team. There was a little bit of a flashback to last year but we came out and played through a lot. We just fell a little bit short but we’ll be back.
It felt good to see my hard work come in to play in this game. Obviously I wish the outcome was a little bit different and wish we could have won the game but it was good to be able to contribute and help.
We are a new team and there a lot of guys learning how to play with each other. They told us this was a good experience for us. Although we lost we are going to take what we learned from this point and move on. We will take all the experience we gained and use it in future games.
