Postgame Quotes
BYU forward Yoeli Childs
On the changes from Houston’s defense in the second half
"They doubled the post the whole game and we just didn’t hit shots. I made a couple poor decisions in the second half and there’s not much more to it."
On what Houston did well
"They were better than us at every aspect tonight. They played harder than us, they hit more shots than us and they came down and made big plays. TJ was our guy making big plays tonight. I didn’t step up, other guys didn’t step up and hit tough shots, and we were kind of just riding on TJ. They had several guys that were hitting tough shots. They just did a great job shooting the ball. They had a guy that was 4 for 16 on the season come in and hit five threes, so that messes up your game plan a little bit. Credit to them, they had a great plan and they executed it well."
BYU guard TJ Haws
On what was working well in the first half
"Pick and roll with Yoeli and me is hard to guard. If we’re patient and make the right basketball play I feel like we can get good looks when we want. In that first half, I thought we got into that a little bit and we were making good plays. I still believe we can make more shots than we did today."
On what the team can learn from this game
"Mentally we need to get better. I thought in the second half they made a run and we didn’t respond. Every good team you play is going to make runs and hit tough shots, but the really good teams respond and play harder and figure that stuff out. They punched us in the mouth in the second half and they broke us, and that can’t happen. I think if we can fix that than we’re going to be alright."
BYU head coach Dave Rose
On tonight's game
"That was an interesting game. I think our guys were prepared, and we had a good plan. They did a really good job at exploiting the things that we felt like we needed to do."
"Early in the game it was important that when we did get open shots that we made them. We’re capable of making wide-open shots and we need to do that. When they double our post player, we need to figure out how to be more efficient and execute a little bit better."
"They just outplayed us. They did a great job of staying with their game plan. We need to regroup and get back to it Monday. We have a big week with two road games next week."
On what Houston did in the second half to help them pull away
"They sped us up a little bit and frustrated us. They got total control of the tempo and attacked us in transition. We gave up four or five offensive rebounds to start the second half. We just got outplayed."
On what went well in the first half
"TJ and Yoeli did everything we needed them to do early in the first half. It’s hard to be a dominant offensive threat when you’re getting double-teamed, but you can be the playmaker and I thought Yoeli did a good job of that."
On what the team can learn from this loss
"As a group we found a group of guys who put up a good fight and got us back within nine or 10. We’ll have to break it down and see. This felt like a league game. I think the guys can learn from it. We had a lot of young guys playing a lot of minutes out there, and I think this experience will be good for them."
