PROVO, Utah — BYU men’s golf head coach Bruce Brockbank has announced the signing of Cooper Jones and Peter Kim who will join the Cougar program for the 2023-24 season.

“Todd and I couldn’t be happier with these two great kids joining our program,” said Brockbank. “Jones’ ability to shoot low scores has helped him win numerous tournaments throughout his junior career. He’ll be able to step right in and contribute to our teams success next year. Peter is the type of guy every team needs. He makes everyone around him better, is a great student and will be a tremendous contributor to our team.”

Cooper Jones

Cooper Jones, younger brother of current BYU golfer Zac Jones, will join the program after graduating from Lone Peak High School next May. The Highland, Utah product is a four-time First Team All-State honoree and four-time state champion. During his junior and senior campaigns, Jones earned medalist honors at the 6A Utah Regional Championship.

“We have been watching Cooper for a long time,” said BYU Director of Golf Todd Miller. “He is an incredibly consistent player and always finds a way to be near the lead. He is an excellent ball-striker, but his putter is what makes him one of the top recruits in the country.”

Along with his high school accolades, the incoming freshman took home the individual title at the Brophy Rodeo National High School Golf Invitational in September after firing a 12-under-par total after rounds of 62-70—132 for a five-stroke win. Jones finished in a tie for third at the Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship while also making it to the Round-of-64 at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.

Peter Kim

Peter Kim will join Tyson Shelley as the second Skyline High School graduate on the current Cougar golf squad when he enters the program next year. Kim comes to BYU after a high school career that included being selected to the Utah 5A All-State First Team during his final three seasons (2020, 2021, 2022).

“Peter has been one of the top players in Utah for a few years,” said Miller “This summer he went out and played some great golf in the American Junior Golf Association. He is long off the tee, he has the ability to shoot some really low numbers and make an immediate impact for our team moving forward.”

The rising freshman set the course record at Fox Hollow Golf Course with a 10-under 62 in the final round of the 2021 Fox Hollow Amateur and won the 2022 Colorado Springs Junior by Centura Health Championship by shooting 74-68-66—208. Kim took fifth at the 2022 Under Armour Jordan Spieth Championship (76-70-65—211), fourth at the Hale Irwin Colorado Junior Championship (73-68-70—211) and won the 2021 Utah Junior State Amateur Championship.
