Cougars advance to round of 16 of Dar Walters Classic

BOISE, Idaho -- Six BYU men's tennis players and two doubles teams advanced to the round of 16 after competing on Friday at the Dar Walters Classic hosted by Boise State.

In the first flight of singles, No. 1 seeded Keaton Cullimore defeated Boise State’s Ryland McDermott 6-2, 6-1. Matthew Pearce bested Max Korkh (Montana) 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 while Aidan Carrazedo fell to Utah State’s Samuel Serrano 6-4, 6-4. Jacob Sullivan advanced to the next round by beating Idaho State’s Francis Filipovich 6-0, 6-3.

In the second singles flight, No.1 seeded Garret Vincent downed Yousef Abdo (Portland State) 6-1, 6-1 followed by a victory over Air Force’s Nicholas Carpenter 6-2, 6-4. Sam Tullis beat Grant Wood from Montana State 7-6, 6-3 and secured a close three-set victory over Montana’s Alex Canellopoulos 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

JD Malan defeated Luke Targett (Whitman College) 6-3, 6-1 before losing to Montana State’s Mateus Ceolin 7-6, 6-4. Derek Vincent beat Southern Utah’s Micah Alba 6-0, 6-1 and defeated William Edin from Idaho State in a come-back 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win.  

In the doubles draw, No. 1 seeded duo Cullimore and Pearce outlasted Idaho’s Felipe Fonseca and Guilherme Scarpelli 6-3. Malan and Sullivan bested Idaho State’s Bjorn Scheepbouwer and Keegan Sullivan 6-2. Carrazedo and Derek Vincent fell to Utah’s Dan Little and Santiago Sierra 6-2 while Sam Tullis and Garret Vincent also fell to Boise State’s Kyle Butters and Ryland McDermott 6-1.
