PROVO, Utah – BYU men’s tennis celebrated its successful 2016-17 season and honored the team’s supporters at its annual end-of-season banquet on Wednesday.
BYU head coach Brad Pearce recognized senior Jacob Sullivan as Player of the Year with senior Aidan Carrazedo and freshman Garret Vincent as Coach’s Award recipients.
Sullivan earned Player of the Year for moving from the No. 6 singles slot to No. 1 during the course of this season. Coach Pearce emphasized Sullivan’s consistent optimism on and off the court. Sullivan led the team with 16 singles wins this season, including a 9-3 mark at No. 2 singles and 7-2 record in conference play. He was named to the 2017 All-WCC First Team Singles and All-WCC Second Team Doubles.
Carrazedo earned the first of two coach’s awards for being an example of the culture the tennis team is working to achieve. Coach Pearce highlighted Carrazedo for fulfilling his team role during every match, no matter the position he was asked to play. He led the team with 13 doubles wins and clinched matches over No. 42 Drake, Boise State and Pacific. Carrazedo was also named to All-WCC Second Team Doubles with Sullivan.
Vincent was recognized as the second coach’s award recipient for being a team player and supporting his teammates on the sidelines in every match this season. Vincent defeated his opponent at No. 5 singles to help the Cougars defeat Montana State during BYU’s doubleheader at home in February. Vincent also participated in fall preseason tournaments where he earned straight-set victories against opponents from Air Force and Portland State.
The Racqueteer of the Year award went to Ricky Frank, the football receivers coach at Pleasant Grove High School and the BYU men's tennis team's biggest supporter this year. The team and coaching staff commended Frank for his constant encouragement and coaching at every home match.
Each tennis player was also recognized for his achievements and contributions to the team during the season.
The Cougars closed the season with a 13-12 overall record and 10-2 record at home. With a 6-3 conference mark, BYU finished the regular season in third place in West Coast Conference standings.
