Gauchos Overcome Cougars

PROVO -- For the first time since 1997, the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos defeated the BYU Cougars in an Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match, overcoming a first match loss Friday night to beat the Cougars 3-0 Saturday in Santa Barbara.

"We couldn't stop their momentum," BYU head coach Tom Peterson said. "We just made too many errors and gave in to the pressure."

The Cougars struggled on offense, committing 74 attack errors and 18 service errors through the three games. No Cougar was able to reach more than nine kills in the match, with junior Jonathan Alleman leading with nine kills, but he hit only a .176 average with 17 errors. Senior Luka Slabe hit a .636 average with eight kills on 11 attempts, and middle blocker Chris Gorny hit a team-high .667 with seven kills on nine attempts with only one error.

While the Cougars outblocked the Gauchos 10-5 Friday night, in Saturday's match the teams were even with 6.5 team blocks each. However, the Gauchos out-played the Cougars in all other categories, led by senior Keith Busam's match-high 15 kills. On defense, middle blocker Justin Adams contributed five total blocks, three solo blocks and four digs for UC Santa Barbara.

"They out-dug, out-hit, and out-played us," Peterson said. "They got on a roll and we just couldn't come back."

With the 27-30, 27-30, 22-30 loss, the Cougars fall 8-2 overall and in conference play. The Gauchos improve to 5-10 overall and 2-7 in the MPSF.

The BYU Cougars return home this weekend to play top-ranked Hawaii on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 20 and 21. Friday night's match will be in the Marriott Center as the Cougars attempt to re-break the NCAA single-match attendance record set by BYU in 1999. Thursday's match will be in the Smith Fieldhouse; both matches begin at 7 p.m. (MST).
