BYU Repeats As MWC Soccer Champs With 6-1 Victory Over Utah

Las Vegas, Nev. (Nov. 4, 2000) Kim Lowe picked up her 10th and 11th goals of the year leading the 9th ranked BYU women's soccer team to its second straight MWC Soccer crown with a 6-1 victory over Utah, Saturday.

The win improves the Cougars 2000 record to 18-3-1, 6-0. Utah ends the year with a 13-7-1, 4-2 record.

Lowe got the BYU offense on the scoreboard in the eighth minute of the championship game after receiving a pass from Michelle Peterson. Utah came back eight minutes later with their lone goal of the game by their leading scorer, Amy Kofoed at the 14-minute mark. By halftime it was the Cougars taking the 4-1 advantage.

In the second half, Lowe put in her second goal of the game after a shot from Staci Reynolds rebounded off the goal post. Freshman Lydia Ojuka came off the bench to pick up her third goal of the season in the 70th minute of the match.

"This is a big win and something we've prepared for all year," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "At the beginning of the season one of our goals was to be playing our best soccer right now and I'm pleased and proud of how all of our 26 players are performing right now."

Rockwood not only credited her seniors and the rest of her starting line up but her bench players as well. "Our bench players have given us some great performances in both of the tournament games this week," she added.

Aleisha Cramer, Michelle Peterson, Sara Reading and Jeni Willardson were named to the All-Tournament Team with Peterson picking up this year's MVP award.

Amy Kofoed and Shauna Gurr were named to the All-Tournament team from Utah.

BYU will represent the Mountain West Conference at this year's NCAA Women's College Cup starting Wednesday, Nov. 8. The 48-team pairings will be announced Sunday night, 10 p.m. Eastern time.
