FRISCO -- Freshman Daniel Summerhays, in his second tournament as a Cougar, finished 12th at the Sooner Invitational on Tuesday leading BYU to a ninth-place finish.

"He had a great week," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "His play was one of the real highlights of this tournament for us."

Summerhays finished four-under-par and earned his first top-20 finish of his BYU career. The two-time Utah State Amateur champion was followed by Sophomore Greg Machtaler who earned his second consecutive top-25 finish as he finished two-over-par and in 23rd place. Ron Harvey Jr. struggled in the final round to finish 72-72-76--222 and in 35th place. Senior Jared Overton also finished among the top-40 individuals as he went 75-75-74--224.

"We really need a fourth guy to step up and score well in order for us to finish in the top five," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "I think we can be a strong team if we can get our fourth and fifth guys to raise their level of play."

The young Cougar squad fell from eighth to ninth place on the windy, final day, but now looks forward to taking on top ranked Georgia Tech in a Ryder Cup style match on Sept. 21. The BYU-Georgia Tech match-up will take place the Golf Club of Georgia in Atlanta the same weekend as the BYU-Georgia Tech football game.

TCU ran away with the team title as they beat out Oklahoma and New Mexico by 14 strokes. John Kidwell of host Oklahoma finished 11-under-par and captured the individual title.
