SOMIS -- With three Cougars among the top 25 individuals, BYU's men's golf team finished the first round in fifth place at the Club Glove Intercollegiate at the Saticoy Country Club on Monday.

Sophomore Greg Machtler continued his consistent play by shooting 36-36--72 even par and is tied for 12th place. True freshman Daniel Summerhays looking for his second consecutive top-25 finish carded a two-over-par 74 and is tied for 22nd individually.

"This is a real challenging course, but our guys stepped up and played well," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "Overall, I'm pleased with how all of our guys played this first round. We didn't have to count any high scores, which is a big plus for us."
