SOMIS -- BYU stumbled in Tuesday's final round to finish eighth out of 12 teams in the Club Glove Intercollegiate at the Saticoy Country Club.
Facing several top 25 teams, BYU had little room for error. The Cougars started the day with three individuals among the top 20 and in sixth place, but windy weather conditions and poor course management cost the Cougars as BYU fell behind California and Oklahoma on the final day.
"It's the kind of golf course that if you hit one bad shot you're going to get at least a double bogie," BYU head golf coach Bruce Brockbank said. "The pins were in some tough positions and we made some poor choices going for the pin on several occasions."
Daniel Summerhays was the top individual Cougar for the second consecutive tournament. The freshman from Farmington, Utah finished 74-72-74--220 four-over-par and in 13th place. Summerhays has placed among the top 25 individuals in all three tournaments of his young BYU career.
"He's a gutsy player who finds a way to shoot a good score," Brockbank said.
Another bright spot for the Cougars this week was the play of freshman Clay Bingham, who fired a solid final round 74 to help the Cougars in his first collegiate tournament since returning from a Church mission a year ago.
"It's great when your number five golfer can shoot a good score like that," Brockbank said. "Clay (Bingham) did a great job today."
Greg Machtaler, who was even par and in ninth place heading into Tuesday's final round, struggled to find his rhythm. The Sophomore from British Colombia carded a third round 79 to finish tied for 19th. This was Machtaler's third consecutive top 25 individual finish this season.
Senior Jared Overton was also among the top 20 individuals after the first two rounds, but faltered on a couple holes to finish the tournament with an 81. Overton finished tied for 39th while teammate Ron Harvey Jr. had his worst finish of the season placing 46th.
UC Irvine turned in an amazing final round to erase a five stroke deficit to host Pepperdine and win by one stroke.
The Cougars will stay in California and play in the Fresno Lexus Classic this Friday and Saturday at the San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno, Calif.
