AUSTIN -- The Cougars make a valuable comeback in Texas' Morris Williams Intercollegiate from 16th to 14th place ahead of New Mexico in Tuesday's final round.
BYU shot a two-over-par 290 in the tournament's third round to finish seventeen-over-par (295-296-290--881) among eight top-20 nationally ranked teams, with five of them being ranked in the top-10.
"This tournament was a good wake-up call for our guys," said head coach Bruce Brockbank. "At this point in the season it's not a bad week to get a nose bleed and learn from it."
Although it was a tough tourney for the team, two players did keep the team alive. Once again, freshman superstar, Daniel Summerhays, and sophomore Canadian Ron Harvey, Jr. played outstanding to finish first and second in the BYU lineup for two consecutive tournaments. Summerhays carded a 69 in Tuesday's round to put him even-par for the tournament and one shot shy of a top-20 finish individually. Harvey shot 72 in the final round to total one-over-par and finish tied for 24th.
"I'm really proud of how Danny (Summerhays) played today," Brockbank said. "Ron also had a really good tournament for us. However, all three rounds we were lacking a fourth score and so our depth really hurt us against a field like this."
Playing out of the ordinary, young freshman Oscar Alvarez and sophomore Greg Machtaler had a challenging tournament this week. Both finished tied for 67th with a score of eleven-over-par. Alvarez did make substantial comeback from his previous first and second round scores.
"Oscar doubled the first hole and then made a good comeback to finish even on the day," Brockbank said.
Overall as Coach Brockbank looks back on the team's play to learn what it needs to improve on for the next event, he determined the problem to be the team's putting.
"From tee to green we are looking as good as anybody in this tournament, but putting is where it matters and we didn't quite get it done," Brockbank said.
BYU's next tournament will be the Border Olympics hosted by Texas A&M at Loredo C.C. on April 4-5.
