She had picked up the double double in the first half of play. Danielle Cheesman and Jennie Overdiek also tallied double digits with 20 and 13 respectively. 2003-04 Season Outlook
Hoping to rebound from an injury-plugged season, this year's team comes back with talent and experience from last season's MWC Championship run in Las Vegas and a sixth consecutive post season appearance.
Returning Players
Under third-year head coach Jeff Judkins, the Cougars will use the experience gained by the younger players to build a winning season. Returning players, such as junior starter Danielle Cheesman, senior guard Kestlee Nelson, and underclassman with significant playing time, will need to step up and fill leadership roles. Cheesman, the Cougars' second-leading scorer and leading rebounder, will provide the team with versatility with her outside shooting ability and solid presence under the basket. Cheesman spent part of the 2003 summer trying out for the USA Women's Basketball Team.
Senior center Ashleigh Chamberlain and junior forward Kristen Kozlowski will also provide height in the paint and help Cheesman pull down the boards. Juniors Julie Sullivan, who suffered a torn ligament in her knee and started in 13 of 14 games last season, along with guard Kali Taylor will return to the Cougar roster. Nelson, who replaced Sullivan in the starting lineup, will return with experience playing in pressure situations. In MWC play Nelson toped the list in field goal percentage from behind the arc (53.6). Sophomore Jennie Overdiek will be a strong threat on the defensive end with her 12 starts from last season. Also back for a second season with BYU are Ambrosia Anderson and Nancy Seljaas. Both got significant playing experience as freshmen.
Newcomers
With four new freshmen coming in, including three Utah natives, the Cougars' will be able to develop the perimeter players into excellent talent. Mountain View High School standouts Hollie and Heather Hansen, younger sisters of BYU graduate and Atlanta Hawks Travis Hansen, led their team to State championships and will add depth in the guard position.
Joining the Hansen twins in the guard position is Melinda Johnson, younger sister of Ute standout Brinton Johnson, of Murray High School who will be a great addition on the outside. Tiari Goold, a guard from Milwaukie, Ore., will also add talent with great passing skills and knowledge of the game.
With the talent returning from last year and the incoming athletes, BYU will battle for a title at the MWC tournament and another run to the NCAA Tournament.
The Judkins file
Overall Record: 45-23, is in his third season at BYU.
Entering the 2003-04 season, head coach Jeff Judkins, is back for a third year at the helm of the Cougar women's program. Coach Judkins took the women's team to back-to-back NCAA appearances as well as to the title games of the MWC Championships, winning the title game in 2001-02.
An all-state selection in basketball, football and baseball, Judkins played basketball for the University of Utah Utah from 1974-78. While playing for the Utes, he helped the team win one conference championship and two berths in the NCAA Tournament.
He was a second-team academic All-American and three-time first-team District VII academic selection. Judkins earned three first-team All-WAC honors and was a member of the 1977 United States World Games team that captured the gold medal.
He played five years in the NBA for the Boston Celtics, Portland Trailblazers, Detroit Pistons and the Utah Jazz. He was a second-round pick by the Celtics in 1978, the same year the Celtics selected Larry Bird with the sixth pick overall.
After his NBA career, he returned to the U of U in 1989, and remained with the men's program for 10 years. Judkins, a Salt Lake City native, graduated from Utah in 1978 with a degree in health and physical education. He is a member of the Utah Sports Hall of Fame and the Crimson Club Hall of Fame.
He and his wife Mary Kay, are the parents of five children: Jessica (23), Jordan (21), Jenna (19), Jaime (16), Jaxson (13).
