PROVO -- With the distance squad's strong showing at the Cardinal Invitational at Stanford Friday night, the BYU men's and women's track teams captured first place in every event Saturday at the BYU Wells Fargo Invitational except the 1,500 meter dash.

Although Dustin Trail didn't take first in the 1,500-meter run, he did take second, running a personal best time of 3:49.98 that also qualifies him for regionals.

Bryce Nielsen also had a regional qualifying mark in the high jump when he cleared 6'10", a personal best jump and currently the highest jump in the Mountain West Conference.

"Both Dustin and Bryce had a huge day," men's head coach Mark Robison said. "Dustin qualified and improved his personal best time today by about a minute. Bryce had a four inch personal record today in the high jump that also ties the top jump in the conference."

At the Cardinal Invitational, the women's distance squad finished strong with Kassi Andersen clocking a 9:48.74 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, which is currently the fastest collegiate steeple time in the world.

"Kassi did very well yesterday, winning the steeplechase with such a great time," women's head coach Craig Poole said. "Michaela Mannova also ran a great regional qualifying time with a 10:13.00, and she placed fourth."

The men's distance team also competed well at the Cardinal Invitational with Matt Adams running a time of 8:42.20 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, which qualifies him for regionals as well as nationals.

"Matt ran really well and qualified for nationals," men's distance coach Ed Eyestone said. "He ran in the fastest heat with athletes from all over the world. He was the top collegiate finisher, had a huge personal best and now has the seventh best time in BYU's history in the steeplechase."

Junior Bryan Lindsey also did well in the 1,500-meter run with a personal best time of 3:46.04. He ran a smart race, Coach Eyestone said, and looked really strong despite being in a slower heat.

In the 10,000-meter run, David Woodberry reached a personal best mark with a time of 29:46.79 with Chad Durham finishing right in front of him. Durham ran a strong race that almost touched his personal best time.

The sprinters on the women's team captured three personal bests, a season best and many first place titles. With this success, the Cougars look optimistic about the upcoming MWC championships.

"Today was a great day for our sprinters," women's head coach Craig Poole said. "We had some great finishes with some season bests and personal bests. We're right on track with conference coming up."

Freshman Amy Menlove started the collegiate events off on a strong foot with her title in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.77, which is her second best time this season. Sophomore Mary Bennion took first in the 400-meter dash with a personal best time of 55.02.

Jennifer Rockwell came away with a top finish and personal best time, running a 24.30 in the 200-meter dash. Menlove took second in the 200-meter dash with a season best time of 24.69.

The men's and women's track teams will continue training to prepare for conference despite looking a little tired after a week of tough workouts.

"Today was a good day despite being tired," Robison said. "We did better today than yesterday. We fought through being tired, but we looked good. We'll train hard next week and then rest before conference."
