Lemon Drafted By White Sox

Flame-throwing Nick Lemon of BYU was the only Cougar taken in the Major League Baseball draft.

Lemon, a 6-3, 195-pound right-handed pitcher, was the 239th pick overall in the eighth round by the Chicago White Sox.

Lemon, from Elk Grove, Calif., hit speeds of 98 mph at times during the season and was often in the 91-93 mph range with his sinker, cutter fastballs. He posted a 2-4 record in 18 appearances with two saves and five starts and a 6.32 earned run average. Lemon struck out 43 batters in 37 innings, for an average of 12.9, which would have ranked him in the top four nationally had he pitched more innings.

"It is great for him to have this opportunity if that is what he chooses to do," said BYU Coach Vance Law of Lemon, who transferred to BYU for his junior season after serving a mission to Washington, D.C., in between years at Consumes River Community College in California.
