BYU Outshoots Idaho State But Falls In Season Opener

The first game of the 2004 regular season for BYU Women's Soccer began on the road and ended in a tough loss to Idaho State 3-1.

Throughout the game the Cougars had many scoring opportunities that came up empty against the Bengals, out shooting Idaho State 13-7 on the night.

"We hope to be able to learn from this loss, and we need to continually work to get better," said BYU women's head coach Jennifer Rockwood.

The scoring came late as both teams took their time getting used to one another as the season got underway. By halftime, the game was tied at 0-0. Idaho State struck first with two goals in the 49th and 58th minutes by Ashlee Maughan and Jessie Bobert, respectively. A bright spot for the Cougars came 20 seconds later in the 58th minute, when sophomore Annie Zwahlen scored bringing BYU withing one goal, down 2-1. Idaho State answered with its final goal of the evening when Sarah Hobdey scored in the 64th minute putting the Bengals up 3-1.

BYU finished with five corner kicks to Idaho State's one.

The Cougars host No. 11 Kansas Jayhawks on Monday, Aug. 30 in Provo at South Stadium Field with an early starting time of 2:00 p.m. (MDT) Admission is free for the game.
