LOS -- BYU's men's tennis team gave up its first loss of the season today, losing to 2nd ranked UCLA 7-0.

BYU's (2-1) youth and inexperience were exposed as they failed to win a single match, getting swept by a very good and seasoned UCLA team. The loss was particularly hard to swallow as five Cougars hail from the Southern California area.

But the Cougars didn't go down without a fight. James Ludlow nearly beat UCLA's Mathieu Dehaine in three sets but couldn't quite hang on in the end, as he lost the match 6-1,5-7,6-2. BYU's Shane LaPorte also gave 99th ranked Kris Kwinta a scare as he battled hard in the first set only to have Kwinta squeak by for a 7-5 victory. LaPorte would lose the second set 6-3. UCLA 62nd ranked Chris Lam also avenged last year's loss to Chip Hand by beating the Cougar in an equally tough match 6-3,6-4.

The Cougars are on the road again tomorrow as they face UC Irvine at 1:30 p.m., followed by Friday's match against University of San Diego.
