PROVO -- The Mountain West Conference named BYU junior Josh McAdams Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week after his record setting performance in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the Stanford Invitational on Friday.

McAdams set a new conference record in the event, crossing the finish line in 8:40.48. The mark broke the old conference record by nearly two seconds. The mark is currently the second fastest time in the nation this year.

BYU distance coach Ed Eyestone said McAdams ran a great race, adding he thinks McAdams can still improve and run faster. He also said McAdams ran a very controlled and smart race.

McAdams won the event at the prestigious Stanford Invitational with a strong finish.

"I've got a lot of confidence in my kick right now," McAdams said. "I just let it go the last 400 meters."

McAdams time also places him fifth all-time in the steeplechase at BYU, behind four-time Olympian Henry Marsh, Steve Chipman, Arild Wathne and All-American Ted Meacham.
