WAHIAWA -- BYU's fifth-ranked men's golf team is in fifth place after shooting a 10-under-par 278 in the first round of the John Burns Intercollegiate on the Leilehua Golf Course.

2005 U.S. Publinks champion Clay Ogden led the way for the Cougars, firing an opening round 67 (-5). BYU's two All-Americans, Oscar Alvarez and Jake Ellison, are tied for 27th place at two-under-par. 2005 MWC champion, Nick Becker was one stroke back of Alvarez and Ellison with a one-under 71. Daniel Summerhays finished the day at one-over-par 73.

"We had a real average day and we didn't make as many putts as we would have liked, but we're still in contention," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said.

Auburn leads the tournament thanks to an opening-round 273 (-15) followed by the University of Arizona, who finished 13-under-par. BYU trails Auburn by five strokes heading into the second round.
