Cougars Struggle to Find their Stroke

SUNRIVER -- Following a sensational first round Thursday, the BYU men's golf team couldn't get things together Friday shooting the second highest round of day at 295 and finishing in fourth place.

The Cougars are currently three-over par and 12 strokes back of tournament leader New Mexico. It was not the kind of day that head coach Bruce Brockbank expected from his team.

"What can I say; it was very disappointing," Brockbank said. "It seemed like all our putts just lipped out today. We just didn't hit the ball well at all."

Junior, Clay Ogden, was the tournament leader heading into the second round at three-under par. He struggled with a costly double bogey on the par-4 fourth hole, and finished five-over par at the end of the day.

One bright spot for BYU was the steady play of sophomore, Daniel Summerhays. Summerhays carded a 72 on the day, remaining tied for sixth place at one-under par.

"Summerhays really hung tough today," Brockbank said. "He was driving the ball very well. That kid always seems to hang in there when others are struggling."

On the par-4 fourth, Summerhays hit his first shot to the left in the trees, only to shoot his second shot about 15 yards over the green. He calmly chipped onto the green and sank his putt to save par.

Coach Brockbank said his boys are more than capable of coming back in the final round. "I've seen these guys shoot 15 or 20-under par as team in a given round," he said. "I hope we just come out and play well tomorrow; because it's going to take an outstanding round to catch the Lobos."

The Cougars begin the final round on Saturday at 9:20 am. They will play with UNLV and Colorado State. Live coverage is available at golfstat.com.
