SUNRIVER -- The BYU men's golf team fired a four-under par 284 and are tied for first place with New Mexico after the first round of the MWC Championships.
Junior, Clay Ogden, led the charge for the cougars shooting a tournament low 69. He leads all players at three-under par.
Head coach Bruce Brockbank said that Clay's score was impressive considering the course condition. "Clay played so tough today," he said. "He putted great and his one mistake on the day was a double bogey on twelve. I thought shooting under par was a great day considering the conditions."
Winds whipped through the Crosswater Club course in Sunriver, OR, at close to twenty miles per hour. Some early morning frost on the course also delayed tee-times a couple hours.
Coach Brockbank said he was pleased with everyone's performance. "I was able to follow Daniel Summerhays for most of his round, and he really battled out there," he said. "Oscar (Alvarez) and Nick (Becker) weren't far behind either."
Summerhays is currently tied for sixth place after shooting a one-under par 71. Nick Becker, the defending MWC Champion, and Oscar Alvarez were one stroke back of Summerhays at even par. They are tied for eleventh place.
It was a great start for the Cougars in their quest to secure the number one seed in the NCAA West Regional next month.
Coach Brockbank said he expects his guys to come out and play even better tomorrow. "I like how this team finishes," Brockbank said. "They always seem to play better and better as the tournament goes on. Let's hope that is the case again here."
The Cougars will tee off starting at 10:40 am tomorrow, teaming with TCU and New Mexico. Live tournament coverage is available on golfstat.com.
