Richmond Va. (Oct. 2, 2006) -- The No 12. BYU men's golf team has finished their first day of competition at the PING/Golfweek Preview.

The Cougars are currently tied for seventh place with the No. 6 ranked team, Arizona State.

Nick Becker currently leads the BYU team in 12th place shooting a 70 on the par-70 course. Jake Ellison is one stroke behind in 17th place. Clay Ogden is one stroke behind Ellison with a 72.

"I'm not happy with how we've done," said assistant coach Todd Miller. "My expectations haven't been met. We did however get a good feel for the course and left the course with a good attitude. I think we can do a lot better tomorrow. We still have a shot."

Robert Gates, Niklas Lemke and Pablo Martin are currently all tied for first place with 67(-3).

The PING Preview is one of the toughest tournaments of the season for the Cougars as it is a preview for the upcoming 2007 NCAA Men's Golf Championship. The top-15 teams from last year's tournament are competing to see who will be among the best in the country this current season.

Play will resume for the BYU Cougars Tuesday at 8:00 am. Live stats will be posted throughout the day on golfstat.com.
