BIRMINGHAM -- The BYU men's golf team ended its first day of play at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate strong with a 10-under-par.
The No. 12 Cougars are currently in sixth place at the tournament, which will continue Tuesday at Birmingham's Old Overton Club.
Breakout player Daniel Summerhays leads the Cougars after the first day of play. Summerhays is currently tied for 10th place with a 5-under 66 on the par-71 course.
Seniors Nick Becker and Clay Ogden are tied for 22nd place. Both players are at 2-under-par.
"We wanted to be in contention to win the tournament," said head coach Bruce Brockbank. "We just keep making little mistakes. Tomorrow, we will find a way to come back up."
The University of Alabama is the tournament leader after the first day at 26-under.
Play will resume Tuesday at 8 a.m. CST.
