SALT LAKE -- Despite controlling possession for most of the game Thursday evening, BYU tied UNLV 0-0 as the Rebels advanced to the Mountain West Conference Championship on penalty kicks.
"I thought we played a great game tonight," head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "We came out with all kinds of energy. The difference between tonight and Saturday was putting the ball in the back of the net Saturday."
BYU defeated UNLV, 2-0, when the two teams met last Saturday.
The Rebels had the first good opportunity 10 minutes into the game. Armani Rice received a pass from the midfield, took a couple dribbles on the right side and sent a long shot at BYU keeper Erika Woodbury. Woodbury stretched and barely tipped the ball over the crossbar.
BYU got its first look at the net in the 25th minute when the Cougar defense sent a long pass up field to sophomore Jessica Aquino. Aquino split through the last Rebel defenders but was tripped up by UNLV goalie Alicia Lugo.
The Cougars thought they had a goal minutes later when Katie Larkin sent a corner kick over to Claire Thomas, who headed the ball over to Alyssa Vander Veur. Vander Veur sent a one-touch shot to the far post, but Rebel defender Dani Davis came out of nowhere to make the save.
With two minutes left in the half, Larkin received the ball on the baseline, flipped it over to Thomas for a one-touch rocket toward the far post. The shot was just wide.
BYU didn't have another close scoring opportunity until the 74th minute when the team found each other for several quick passes, which resulted in Aquino receiving the ball for a shot in the goal box. She fired at the near post, but Lugo made the save.
UNLV's best opportunity of the game came with less than three minutes left in the first overtime. Jessica Destito sent a cross to Tanya Roberts, who headed the ball toward the net. Woodbury stretched and somehow got her fingertips on the ball to tip it away from the net. The ball bounced off the crossbar and stayed in play. Woodbury had to react fast and jump on top of the ball.
After two scoreless overtime periods, the game was decided by a shootout. The Rebels went 4-4, while BYU netted one goal.
The Cougars outshot UNLV 22 to 14 on the night with both teams earning five shots on goal.
BYU now looks to next week and the NCAA Tournament. Play will start Thursday at a location to be decided.
