HONOLULU -- The No. 14 BYU men's golf team still sits in second place after a three-under-par 285 in the second round of the John H. Burns Invitational today.

Senior Jake Ellison is tied for sixth and currently leads the team with a six-under-par 138 total after turning in a 69 for the day. Following a slow start, Ellison got things back with an eagle and a couple of birdies, as he played solid down the stretch. Next for BYU, is Daniel Summerhays who also turned in a 69 for the second round and is tied for 14th place. As a team the story was different; the Cougars had three double-boogies in the last four holes letting No. 7 UNLV jump ten strokes ahead.

"Although for most of the day we had it going okay, we didn't putt very well" said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank, "We were sloppy coming in and let it slip away."

Falling back a few spots into 18th place, senior Nick Becker went 4-over-par thursday and is two-under 142 for the tournament. Clay Ogden is tied for 25th with a one-under par for the second round and for the tournament. Sophomore Nick Killpack (72-76--148) is tied for 68th place, freshman Robbie Fillmore (73-76--149) is tied for 77th place, and freshman Brad Nicholson (78-80--158) is 118th.

Individually, leading the John H. Burns Invitational is UNLV's Jared Texter (69-65--134) who is at 10-under-par. Texter helped his team repeat their first round score (277) for a total of 22-under-par 554. They still sit at the top with BYU in second and Texas A&M close behind.

"I know the team can come out tomorrow and have a solid round," Brockbank said, "If we get out of the box early, capitalize on the birdie holes and make more putts fall, we can turn in a low score and catch up to UNLV."

The Cougars will start play at the par 72 Leilehua Golf Course at 8 am on Friday.
