PROVO -- The BYU men's and women's track teams are going to Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz. This meet marks the first outdoor meet of the season for the Cougars in the U.S.

"This is a big event, as far as number of teams," BYU men's head coach Mark Robison said. "There are probably 15 teams going. It will be good competition and good weather. This will be the first meet of the outdoor season for many of the athletes, so this will tell us a lot about where we are as a team."

The Cougars had eight regional qualifications last week and finished second behind Texas A&M in Monterey, Mexico. Last year's ASU meet proved to be a catalyst for the rest of the season for some athletes.

"Kyle Perry had a breakout race last year," men's distance coach Ed Eyestone said. "We have him in the 1500 again, and it should be a good test for him. The rest of the team except for Ryan Merriman will be running in the 800 meters to work on speed."

The women will travel some different athletes from last week.

"It will be a big meet," BYU women's head coach Craig Poole said. "We will send some athletes that haven't competed outdoors this season. We will also send some of the athletes that qualified last week to give them a chance to improve their marks. We have a strong distance team. This week some will compete in events that aren't their specialty. This meet will set us up for how we try to compete the rest of the season."

The ASU Jim Click Invitational will get underway on Friday and will conclude Saturday.
