AUSTIN -- After getting rained-out early in the afternoon, the No. 14 BYU men' golf team is tied for sixth place with a five-over-par 293 at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate on Monday.

The second round was cancelled half-way through as the on-and-off morning drizzle turned into heavy rain in the afternoon. The first 18 holes were completed successfully, but with the rain showing no signs of stopping, the event was cut to 36 holes. With a shotgun start on the trickiest holes of the golf course, the Cougars never got their rhythm and were cut short on the second eighteen when they were adjusting a little bit better to the weather conditions and the greens.

"We finished poorly with a couple of three-putts. The greens were really slow and we never adjusted," said head coach Bruce Brockbank, "It is a challenging course, and even though a couple of guys hung in there today, we never really got it going."

Freshman Robbie Fillmore steadily led the Cougars with sixteen pars, a bogey and a birdie to finish even-par 72 and tied in ninth place. Seniors Jake Ellison and Clay Ogden were both one shot behind Fillmore with a one-over-par 73. Nick Becker and Daniel Summerhays struggled during the first round to finish three-over-par 75 and four-over-par 76 respectively. Individual competitor Nick Killpack finished with a six-over-par 78.

"With the rain that was coming down this afternoon, the course is going to play especially hard tomorrow," said Fillmore, " All we need to do as a team is think fairways and greens. We need to be patient and realize that even par is going to be a great score."

For the second and final round of the tournament, the Cougars are paired with host No. 22 Texas and with No. 3 Oklahoma State, the 2006 National Champions.

"I'm happy with our pairing for tomorrow, it serves as a positive measuring point for our guys," said Brockbank, " It is going to be fun to see them out there competing and challenging a team that has experienced a national championship."

The tournament continues Tuesday with Cougar tee times starting at 8:30 am. Follow the action live on www.golfstat.com
