Albuquerque, N.M. (Sept. 14, 2007)- Sophomore Robbie Fillmore led the BYU men's golf team in the first day of the William H. Tucker Classic on Friday. Fillmore shot two consecutive rounds of 73 as he finished the day at 2-over par.
"Robbie gave everything he had today," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "He played some of the hardest holes to start the day so for him to get two birdies in his last three holes of the day showed a lot of toughness."
As a team BYU made a huge improvement from their first round to the second. They shot 17 shots better in their afternoon round of 18 holes. Esteban Calisto and Nick Killpack both shot one-under 71 in their second round of the day. Calisto improved an amazing 10 shots from his first round to his second.
"Our team showed a lot of character in the second round today," Brockbank said. "They didn't quit. I'm excited for what I saw in the afternoon and I know that we can build upon that round as we go into our final round tomorrow."
Of the five golfers that BYU brought to this tournament, three of them are participating in their first collegiate tournament.
There are 17 teams participating in this tournament. Beside BYU there are five other teams from the Mountain West Conference- San Diego State, University of New Mexico, University of Utah, University of Wyoming and the Air Force Academy.
The individual leader after the first day is Jesse Barnsley from Pepperdine. Barnsley shot a first round of 5-under and a second round of 6-under. The team leader is Pepperdine as they shot a combined even par for the day.
This tournament continues Saturday as everyone will play a final round of 18. After this tournament BYU heads to Washington to participate in the Husky Invitational on October 1 and 2.
