SALT LAKE -- Cougars Jonathan Sanchez and Cassidy Mears came away with one final win on Saturday to clinch the doubles title at the University of Utah Invitational in Salt Lake.
As the lone BYU players remaining in the tournament, Mears and Sanchez won a hard-fought 8-6 final match against Weber State foes Sascha Kiehne and Fabio Mancarella.
"Anytime you win a tournament that's a special feeling," said head coach Brad Pearce. "It means you did everything right that week and [Mears and Sanchez] should feel good about it. It's a good confidence boost that they can carry with them throughout the rest of the fall season."
Sanchez and Mears are the only returning players from the 2006-07 season, with Sanchez being the only senior on the team.
"I'm proud of the way they competed throughout the whole tournament," said Pearce. "Seeing as they are the only upperclassman on the team, it was good leadership on their part."
Up next the team will travel to Las Vegas to compete in the ITA Region VII Championships on Oct. 17-20.
