LAS -- Three players on the BYU men's tennis team kicked off the first day of the Wilson ITA Division I Mountain Regional Championship Wednesday by advancing to the round of 32.
Incoming freshmen Thomas Shubert and Evan Urbina defeated opponents from Utah State and Eastern Washington, respectively, pushing them on to the next round of play. Urbina's big 6-2, 6-1 win came against the No. 20 seed in the tournament.
Senior Jonathan Sanchez will also continue competing in the main draw on Thursday after defeating New Mexico's Joe Wood.
In doubles play, winners of the University of Utah Invitational, Cassidy Mears and Sanchez, will be the lone Cougars continuing on in play. Entering the tournament as the No. 8 seed, the pair received a bye in the first round and will prepare to face a fellow Mountain West Conference team in Miles Bugby and Derek Lynch from New Mexico.
While the men competed in Las Vegas, the women's team was in action playing at the Wilson ITA Division I Central Regional Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Newcomer Elizaveta Ezhova defeated opponents from Oral Roberts and Okalahoma to advance through the qualifying singles and continue in the tournament.
The men will resume play Thursday at noon at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas, while the women begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of Tulsa University.
