BIRMINGHAM -- After two rounds at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, BYU sits tied for 10th place with junior Nick Killpack leading the team tied for 12th place at 3-under-par 68-70--138.

The 2007 Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate is being held on the par-71 Old Overton Club Course with yardage set at 6,958. Twelve teams are participating in the three-round, two-day tournament, and Alabama, the host university, leads the tournament at 30-under-par 270-268--538. The Cougars were tied for 6th place after the first round at 1-under-par 283, and shot 1-over-par 285 to finish the day at even-par.

"The scores that we shot today were better, but the course was a bit more attackable," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "I think we're taking a step in the right direction, but we still have some work to do. That won't change from one week to another with such a young team, but our players are working hard to compete every week."

Killpack, one of two juniors on a team with no seniors, said the transition from follower to leader on the BYU squad was abrupt, but positive for him.

"If you're hitting the ball well here, you can make a lot of birdies," he said. "But there are a few holes out there on which you have to really hit some good shots to make par. We're all just working on taking one shot at a time and making the birdies when we get the chance."

The final round of the tournament will be held Tuesday.
