PROVO, Utah -- No. 3 seeded BYU defeated the No. 6 TCU in its first game of the Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Championship on a pair of goals by Katie Larkin and Carolyn Swenson. The Cougars will advance to play No. 2 seeded SDSU in the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 4 p.m. MT. The game will air live on the Mtn.
With the win BYU improves a15-3-2 record, with TCU falling to 9-10-0 to end their season.
A rough first half for both teams ended with the score tied, 0-0. Coming out of the break, a header by Larkin marked her 13th goal of the season.
"We just had to stay positive," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "Everyone believed that the next shot was going in. We got out to the start we wanted and were able to create a lot of opportunities. We told them to keep working hard and believe it was going to happen, and then Katie [Larkin] finally put one in."
With the game coming to a close, and with just under two minutes to play, Swenson recorded her first goal of the season with TCU's goalkeeper Kelsey Walters out of the box.
Unable to create scoring opportunities late in the game, TCU had five shots in the second half. The Cougars out shot the Horned Frogs, 28-9 and edged them in corner kicks, 3-1.
In the last meeting between these two teams, BYU scored a season-high four goals against the Horned Frogs in a 4-1 victory in Provo.
