STOCKTON -- The BYU men's golf team placed 10th at the Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational after a final round score of 290 at Brookside Country Club.
"I think we're all a little bit disappointed with this week's results," BYU coach Bruce Brockbank said. "We know we have a lot of work to do. Scoring conditions were perfect today, and for some reason or another we couldn't quite come through."
Sophomore Robbie Fillmore led the way for the Cougars as he finished tied for 17th overall and 6-under-par for the tournament. Junior Brady Johnson, who finished tied for 37th at even par, followed Fillmore.
"We're still a young team," Brockbank said. "But the card of being young only lasts for so long. If we're any good as coaches we'll find a way to get the most out of our players."
The Cougars were tied for eighth after day one of the tournament, and the team then dropped to 12th place after day two. Consistent play on the final round bounced the team back up to 10th place. Fillmore and Johnson shot final round scores of even-par 72, with freshman Esteban Calisto and junior Nick Killpack firing one-over-par 73s.
The 14-team event featured some of the best teams in the country, including No. 1 Charlotte. Charlotte junior Stefan Wiedergruen fired a final round 66 to take the individual title. Wiedergruen's overall score of 17-under-par led the 49ers to the team victory as well.
Despite not finishing as well as they wanted, the players remain optimistic about their potential.
"This week I think we learned that we can play with any of the teams that were here, but the difference is that we need to limit some of our mistakes," Fillmore said. "I think we can improve on our mental toughness as we take some time off over the winter."
The Cougar's won't be in action again until Jan. 28, 2008, in Tucson, Ariz., for the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate.
