TUCSON -- The BYU men's golf team opened its spring season Monday at the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate. After the first round, the Cougars sat in 13th place, with junior Nick Killpack leading the team tied for 11th place at 2-under-par. The second round of the tournament was suspended due to darkness.
The Ping Arizona Intercollegiate is a 16-team tournament including 87 competitors and is being held at the par-71 Arizona National Golf Course. The tournament tees are set at 6,793 yards.
"We're hitting a lot of good shots," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "But the challenge is that when we miss shots, they're going in all the wrong places. I'd love for us to finish with a strong team score in the third [round]."
During the first round, sophomore Robbie Fillmore saw signs of potential from his teammates.
"Today we had a lot of learning experiences that will help us prepare for the season and our next tournament in Hawaii," Fillmore said.
The Ping Arizona Intercollegiate continues Tuesday with the Cougars finishing the second round starting at hole 14 and then playing a final round of 18 holes.
After this tournament BYU heads to Hawaii to participate in the John H. Burns Invitational on February 20, 21 and 22.
