PROVO -- After two rounds of the PING Cougar Classic, the BYU men's golf team sits in fourth place at 10-under-par. With spring weather and ideal course conditions at Riverside Country Club, the BYU men's golf team competed against conference rivals and several other teams in their annual home tournament.
The first round proved to be a challenge for the Cougars as they faced firm greens and struggled with their short game. They came back in the second round, shooting a team score of 279 to finish the day at 10-under-par.
"I don't think we recognized the firmness of the course in the first round," said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank. "But we came back and played well in the second round."
Sophomore Robbie Fillmore led the Cougars throughout the day, firing an even-par 72 in the first round and a 5-under-par 67 in round two. Along with Fillmore, three other Cougars sit in the top twenty of the tournament. Esteban Calisto is tied for 12th at 3-under-par, while Nick Killpack and Brad Nicholson are one stroke behind Calisto in for 15th place.
The BYU Ping Cougar Classic is a 14-team tournament featuring teams from every Division I golf program in Utah and No. 46 St. Mary's. BYU leads the Utah schools in fourth place, 13 strokes ahead of ninth-place Utah. Weber State follows Utah in 10th place, Utah State sits in 12th, and UVSC is tied for 13th place at 15-over-par. The tournament is being held at the par-72 Riverside Golf Course, where tees are set at 7,001 yards.
Coach Brockbank looks forward to the opportunity to improve scores in the final round.
"We need to show some consistency, and then we will be in contention for tournament victory," he said.
The final round of the Cougar Classic will be played Saturday with tee times beginning at 8 a.m.
